Understanding Sensory Processing Disorder

At Kinder Clinic, we know that Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) can affect a child's daily life. SPD occurs when sensory integration isn't automatic, causing difficulties in interpreting sensations. Our therapists are dedicated to helping children with SPD develop appropriate responses.

Holistic Approach

Children with SPD may avoid or seek out specific sensory inputs, like touch or sound. Some may shun hugs or messy play, while others crave them. At Kinder Clinic, we identify these behaviors and tailor holistic interventions to each child's needs.

Our Process

Empowering children to succeed in life and reach their goals.

We take into account and observe all the factors that may be limiting the child’s development and function including:

We also gather information from the parents and teachers in order to determine how the child is functioning at home and school and what the functional areas of concern may be.

Fortunately, because our assessments are performed thoroughly and look at the whole child, we often observe concerns that may have previously been missed and then refer to a variety of other disciplines including Developmental Pediatricians, Speech and Language Pathologists, Educational Therapists, Developmental Optometrists, Neuropsychologists, and ENTs to ensure the highest quality of care for our clients.

We believe that a child's occupation is to learn and play and as a result of this, the sessions are child-led, fun, and engaging.

To the untrained eye, the sessions can appear just like play, but they are strategically organized to facilitate and foster a child’s interest and excitement to engage in activities that are challenging for them and thus support their development.

We also utilize what’s called “therapeutic use of self” which is the “thoughtful and deliberate use of one’s personality, opinions, and judgments as a component of the therapeutic process.” We strive to give all of ourselves to each child knowing that we are able to make a positive impact on the life of that child and their family.
